Housing Minister and Nelson MP Dr Nick Smith welcomed the opening of the new $10 million centre at the Summerset retirement village in Nelson.
“This is a wonderful new asset for Nelson which will provide a quality of life for 350 residents for many years to come. It helps grow the overall supply of housing and address the challenges of an ageing population, and it also provides an injection of jobs during construction and in ongoing care and maintenance into the Nelson economy,” Dr Smith says.
“The development of these large scale retirement villages is part of the solution to our challenges over housing supply and a growing older population. Our elder citizens can be less isolated, and have access to better care and facilities, and be free of the maintenance of their large home or section. Freeing up these homes also helps meet the supply problem for homes suitable for younger families.
“This $80 million Summerset village enhances Nelson’s reputation as a great place for New Zealanders to retire. We are centrally located and have a fantastic climate, quality health services, good recreational facilities and a strong network of social services.”
