Strong incomes and job data welcomed

02/11/2016

Nelson MP Dr Nick Smith has described the latest Labour Force Survey data for the Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and West Coast region as the best ever.

“This latest Labour Force Survey data has three very positive results for Nelson. This shows our economy is growing strongly and that families are benefiting from this growth.

“Firstly, it shows our region has the lowest unemployment in New Zealand, at a time when New Zealand’s unemployment is among the world’s lowest. Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and West Coast had 2.8 per cent unemployment as compared to the national average of 4.9 per cent. The 2.8 per cent compares to Northland (7.6 per cent), Auckland (5.3 per cent), Bay of Plenty (5.1 per cent), Gisborne / Hawke’s Bay (6.5 per cent), Taranaki (4.7 per cent), Manawatu / Wanganui (4.6 per cent), Wellington (4.6% per cent), Canterbury (3.9 per cent), Otago (3.7 per cent) and Southland (5.3 per cent).

It is also very positive that average incomes in our region have grown over the last year by 9 per cent or $83 per week to $1008. This is the largest annual increase in 20 years and is at a time of record low inflation of 0.2 per cent. It is also the first time that average wages across the region have topped $1000 a week.

“I am also very encouraged that the number of people employed in the Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and West Coast region has grown by 3800 over the last year to 92,700. This is the highest number of people employed in the region on record.

“This very positive economic data reflects the strength of our regional industries like horticulture, tourism, building and forestry.  It is a great entrée for this Friday’s celebration of Nelson’s business success with the annual Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.”
