Nelson MP Nick Smith says the opening of the new K-Mart store in Richmond, is symbolic of the growing economic confidence that has driven our region to have the lowest unemployment rate in the country.
"The opening of the new Richmond K-Mart is a real sign that economic confidence in the region is on the up.
"New Household Labour Force Survey figures yesterday revealed that we have the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 3.9 per cent – well below the national average of 6.2 per cent and the lowest rate we’ve achieved for some years. It is particularly encouraging that this improvement has come about by the growth of 1300 new jobs over the last year.’’
"The good news is that these figures pre-date exciting new developments like the Richmond K-Mart store which provides another 90 jobs in our region.
"Work and Income was engaged as the exclusive recruitment agency for the Richmond K-Mart so that means even more people off our unemployment queue.’’
Dr Smith today attended the opening of new K-Mart store which he described as another milestone in Richmond’s ongoing growth and development.
The building, owned and constructed by Nelson firm Gibbons Holdings, is also home to a new Benge & Co Green Grocers, and Couplands Bakery. Next month a coffee shop and sushi store will also open onsite, followed by The Warehouse and a two-storey office block which are due for completion in July next year.
Gibbons purchased the former Placemakers site neighbouring Richmond Mall in 2001, and it has sat vacant since 2006.
"I applaud Gibbons for the initiative and investment it has put into this development which not only boosts employment, but also provides a significant asset for our region which consumers will benefit from,’’ Dr Smith says.
"The fact that this development has attracted solid, long-term commitment from large national retailers like K-Mart and The Warehouse shows that these companies are buoyant about the future in regions like ours.
"These major investments and positive latest figures confirm that the Government’s economic policies are working,’’ Dr Smith concluded.
