Nelson Tops NZ for Early Childhood Education

01/03/2013

Nelson MP Nick Smith today welcomed figures showing Nelson has the highest early childhood education participation rates in the country.

In Nelson, 99.3% of children starting school have attended early childhood education and in Tasman, the figure is 97.3%. Both are above the national average of 95%.

"This is an excellent result and a real tribute to the Kindergarten Association and all our other early childhood education providers," Dr Smith says.

"All the evidence shows that children receiving early childhood education do better in life. This is one of the greatest investments we can make in the future of our children."

Government funding for early childhood education has more than doubled from $617 million in 2006/07 to more than $1.3 billion this year.

Ministry of Education figures show enrolments for early childhood education increased nationally by 2400 between 2011 and 2012.

One of National’s priorities this term is delivering better public services and it has set a target of 98% of children starting school will have participated in quality early childhood education in 2016.
