Nelson MP Nick Smith has welcomed today’s announcement that Jetstar is to start flights in and out of the region.
“This is a great vote of confidence in Nelson and good news for residents and businesses. The tourism industry has had a more difficult time since the global financial crisis and the expense of air transport in and out of Nelson significantly impacts on our competiveness as a centre in New Zealand’s visitor industry.
“The greatest benefit will be for the viability of specialist national businesses where air travel costs are a significant portion of their business costs. Our region is isolated and depends on the strength of its links with other parts of the country.
I congratulate Nelson’s airport company, the Nelson City and Tasman District councils and Nelson Tasman Tourism for spearheading the bid to secure Nelson as a Jetstar destination and I have been happy to also lend my support.”
“I also acknowledge that Air New Zealand is a major investor and employer in the Nelson region and the economy benefits from the 200 plus maintenance and network support staff that live and work there. But Nelson needs the competition of Jetstar to keep Air New Zealand’s pencil sharp and air fares competitive.”
“Today’s announcement signals an exciting step in our region’s future.”
